- On Enterprise, admins can allow only approved AI apps. If the connection is blocked by workspace policy, ask a workspace owner or admin to approve the client. notion.com/helpdevelopers.notion.com/guides
- MCP tools act with your full Notion permissions and can access everything you can access. notion.com/help
Authentication
- Your client → Notion MCP
- OAuth sign-in, handled by your MCP client. developers.notion.com/guidesmodelcontextprotocol.io/specification
- Notion MCP → Notion API
- The server acts on your account with the access you approve. notion.com/help
Steps
- Open Notion's MCP setup instructions for your client
- Add the Notion MCP server to your client
Add https://mcp.notion.com/mcp as a remote MCP server that uses the Streamable HTTP transport. Use the SSE endpoint https://mcp.notion.com/sse only if your client doesn't support Streamable HTTP. Many assistants also list Notion in their connector or plugin directory. Clients that support only local servers can use the mcp-remote bridge.
- Sign in to Notion and choose the workspace to authorize
- For non-interactive use, use an MCP token
On Business and Enterprise plans, a workspace owner can create an MCP token in the Notion developer portal. Send it as a bearer token in the Authorization header to the same endpoint; no browser sign-in is needed. Keep the token in an environment variable or secret store. Enterprise workspaces with SAML SSO can instead use enterprise-managed authorization through the identity provider.
- List the server's tools
Your client should list the server's tools. That confirms the connection, not every API permission.
What we observed
- 5 Nov 2026: HTTP 401 with WWW-Authenticate resource_metadata https://mcp.notion.com/.well-known/oauth-protected-resource/mcp and scope default. The metadata names the authorization server https://mcp.notion.com.
